CALLING APPLICATIONS FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT’S COUNSEL 

APPLICATIONS are called for the appointment of President’s Counsel in terms of the Article 33(2)(e) of the Constitution. 

The Attorneys-at-Law who have reached eminence in the legal profession and maintained high standards of conduct and professional rectitude are eligible to apply for the above appointment. Accordingly, the Attorneys-at-Law who satisfy the eligibility criteria specified in the guidelines published in the Gazette Extraordinary No. 2147/37 dated 29.10.2019 

should send the duly completed applications on the from given below under registered cover to “Secretary to the President, Presidential Secretariat, Colombo 01” on or before 07.11.2019. The legend “Appointment of President’s Counsel” should be clearly written on the top left corner of the envelope containing the applications Any applications received after the said date will not be entertained and the Presidential Secretariat will not be held responsible for any misplaced or delayed applications.

Redefining Senior Secondary and Collegiate Curricula for Tomorrow's World : Kannangara Memorial Lecture 2019

The national education system of a country is guided by its national curriculum. It sets the framework for school work by defining the values and objectives for all schools so that the children who leave the  school  system are able to lead  successful lives as citizens. Therefore, the prime concern of the national curriculum should be to  integrate the  development  of  the individual  so that the students can effectively contribute culturally, socially, politically and economically after they leave school. The  system  of  education  in  Sri  Lanka  provides  13  years  of schooling in four cycles: Primary cycle, Junior Secondary cycle, Senior Secondary cycle, and Collegiate cycle.

The Hon. Minister of Education has appointed a committee representing all the state institutions related to education in order to identify the areas that need curricula reforms in general education. The aforesaid committee has prepared a draft identifying the four areas below that need reforms. 

1. New vocational stream introduced to grades 12 and 13 
2. G.C.E. Advanced Level – grades 12 and 13 
3. G.C.E. Ordinary Level- grades 10 and 11 
4. Primary Education

The B.A in English and English Language Teaching is a four year special degree which includes the study of Applied Linguistics, English Language Teaching, Literature and relevant areas of Education. It is meant for anyone who wishes to enter the ELT profession and, would, therefore require a sound knowledge of the theories of ELT.

Entry Requirementsa
All applicants should be above 18 years of age.

or

b) Those who have passed all six courses of the OUSL Diploma in English Language and Literature programme will be permitted direct entry to the Bachelor of Arts in English and English Language Teaching programme. Applicants who qualify under this category should nevertheless submit an application before the closing date.

or
c) Those who have passed the OUSL Advanced Certificate in English, after 2012, (NOT Advanced Certificate in English for Business and Professional Communication offered by the OUSL) with the required grades will be permitted direct entry to the Bachelor of Arts in English and English Language Teaching programme. Applicants who qualify under this category should nevertheless submit an application before the closing date.

or
d) National Diploma in Teaching English (ESL) of two (02) years duration from a National College of Education (NCOE)

or
e) Any other recognized two (02) year teacher training qualification in Teaching English as a Second Language acceptable to the Senate of the OUSL.

or
f) Passed 3 subjects (including English Literature) at the GCE Advanced Level Examination or an equivalent qualification.

All the applicants except those applying under category (b) and (c) are required to sit for a Selection Test on 15th December 2019 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am to be held at all the 09 Regional Centres of OUSL (Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Badulla, Kurunegala, Jaffna and Ratnapura).

Those who have successfully completed the Diploma in English and English Language Teaching programme which was offered by The Open University of Sri Lanka until 2013, can apply for the BA (Hons) in English and English Language Teaching and enter the program at Level 5, without having to sit the selection test. They will be given a credit transfer for the 12 courses completed at Diploma level.

Date of the Selection Test :15th December 2019
